tensley2014 Turner Vineyard Syrah (92-94 Vinous; 92-95 Wine Advocate)

Turner remains Tensley’s only cool climate Syrah, and, just as it has in years past, this wine brings a unique flavor profile to our line-up. Turner’s signature is pepper, and this year’s Turner takes it to the next level. Right away the nose impresses with aromas of white and black pepper that last through the mid-palate and on through the long, lingering finish.  This wine is bright with mouthwatering notes of raspberry and blueberries balanced by a deep, stone fruit core that features hints of licorice and charcoal. It has a lush texture yet still shows great acidity and aging potential (8 to 10 years). This wine will easily pair with a wide variety of foods from heartier chicken dishes to bold, meaty entrees.

tensley2014 Tierra Alta Vineyard Syrah

Our parcel within this volcanic ash based vineyard comes from a steep hillside planted entirely to the 99 Syrah clone. This clone is known for its enticing nuances of minerals and earth, and you can certainly taste them in this bottling.  The 2014 vintage is one of our most extracted yet, and this Tierra Alta shows a dark ruby hue and aromas of coffee, flowers and chocolate. It’s intense and full-bodied yet its finish is long and elegant. Drink this wine now or let it evolve over the next ten years.

tensley2014 Thompson Vineyard Syrah (92-94 Vinous, 93-96 Wine Advocate)

This is our 17th vintage of Thompson Syrah, and it seems the fruit from this vineyard just keeps getting better.  Planted in 1990 to the renowned Estrella clone, Thompson continually produces low yields and exquisite fruit. Pure, subtle, and intricately layered, this year’s Thompson boasts flavors of blackberries, blueberries, and minerals and strikes a beautiful balance between depth and freshness.  This wine is always an excellent choice for aging and will easily last out the next 12 years.

tensley2014 Colson Canyon Syrah (91-93+ Vinous; 93-95 Wine Advocate)

2014 was our second drought year in a row, which meant lower yields, smaller berries and incredibly intense fruit.  This 2014 Colson is one of the most intense Syrah’s we have produced to date. This wine shows an extraordinary concentration of blackberries and black stone fruit, white pepper and chocolate.  This Syrah sees 20% new oak and also shows hints of vanilla on the finish. The mouthfeel is lush and round and the finish is long and lingering.  Drink this wine now or age it up to 12 years

tensley2014 Tensley Vineyard Syrah (92-94 Vinous)

This is the second vintage to be harvested from our Tensley estate vineyard. This two-acre parcel is planted directly behind our house and carefully tended to by our grower and by us. Our son, Oliver, actually planted the very first vine in 2011 and even harvested the first cluster three years later. The vineyard has great sun exposure, sandy soil and a gentle slope that provides great drainage for the vines. 2014 was a drought year, so we cut back on the water to the vines. With fewer clusters and smaller berries, the 2014 Tensley is a deeply extracted and complex wine. The tanins are fine and dusty and the wine is brimming with notes of raspberries, cherries and blackberries. Drink this well-structured wine now or age it over the next 12 years.

The grapes for this year’s Santa Barbara County Syrah come from vineyards all around the appellation. Sourced from Camp Four, Clover Creek, Tensley, Tierra Alta, Thompson and Colson Canyon Vineyards, this wine brings together the many unique characteristics of Santa Barbara County’s microclimates. This wine is fruity and voluptuous with enticing floral notes on the nose and a core or f blueberry, blackberry, violets and pepper. Look for hints of bacon and chocolate on the long, lingering finish. This wine is approachable in its youth but will also age well over the next five or six years.

tensley2014 Colson Canyon Grenache

We make our Grenache exactly the same way we make our Syrah, using 30% whole cluster fermentation and neutral French oak barrels for aging. The 2014 is one of our most complex Grenaches to date. It resonates with bright cherry and plum notes as well as black cherry, white pepper, licorice and exotic spices. This wine is velvety and balanced with a rounded mouthfeel and long, lush finish. Pair this food-friendly Grenache with everything from salmon to chicken to beef. Enjoy it now or over the next 3 to 5 years.

tensley2014 B.M.T. Syrah Blend – (93-95 Vinous; 93-95 The Wine Advocate) Magnum

This year our niece, Bailey Michelle Tensley, for whom this wine is named, turned 21 years old. We started making the BMT back when she was only nine. It is truly hard for us to believe that Bailey is actually old enough to drink her own wine now! Our mission in making the BMT, as with the OGT, was to make a wine that was reflective of Bailey herself: beautiful, elegant, deep. We feel we hit the mark with this blend.

This year’s BMT is made up of 50% Rodney’s Vineyard Syrah, 25% Colson Canyon Syrah, and 25% Colson Canyon Grenache. Vinous’ Antonio Galloni describes the BMT as, “suave, supple and very nicely layered.” The Wine Advocate’s Jeb Dunnuck writes, “…this takes concentration and ripeness to the extreme yet holds everything together beautifully and is a joy to drink.” Look for great structure and minerality from the old-vine Rodney’s Syrah, signature Colson Canyon Syrah flavors of blackberry, cassis and chocolate, and bright raspberry and violet notes from the Colson Canyon Grenache. This wine is approachable now but will age well over the next ten years.

tensley2014 O.G.T. Syrah Blend – (93-95 Vinous; 94-96 The Wine Advocate) Magnum

As many of you know, the OGT Syrah is named for our son, Oliver Gunnar Tensley. We’ve been making this wine since he was born, in 2003, and each year we set out to make an OGT that is as delightful, imaginative and complex as our son himself. In 2014 we were working with some of the deepest, most complex fruit we have seen to date. Conditions had been dry and hot and harvest was early and fast.

While that made for hard work in the winery, it also made for one of the best OGT’s to date. The tried-and-true blend for this wine is 50% Colson Canyon Vineyard Syrah, 25% Tierra Alta Vineyard Syrah, and 25% Thompson Vineyard Syrah. The Wine Advocate’s Jeb Dunnuck calls the OGT, “massive and textured,” while Vinous’s Anotonio Galloni writes that it is, “superb, intense, powerful and explosive.” Look for Colson Canyon’s signature flavors of blackberry, leather, and chocolate to be balanced by the red fruits, floral notes and spice of Tierra Alta and the earthiness, acidity and tannic structure of Thompson. This wine is drinking great now but is sure to mature well over the next ten to twelve years, much like Oliver himself.

tensley2014 Tensley Camp 4 Blanc

The Grenache Blanc and Roussanne for the Tensley Blanc come from continuous blocks in the Camp 4 vineyard. They are picked together and aged together in neutral French oak. This wine is bottled fairly quickly, in January, to retain its fresh, crisp qualities. The Grenache Blanc brings minerality and bright green apple notes to this blend that balance beautifully with the rich, tropical fruits and lush texture of the Roussanne. Pair this Blanc with spicy Thai dishes, fish dishes, or chilled shellfish. This wine is enjoyable now but should age well over the next 3 to 4 years.

2011 “27 Month” Syrah - 93 points/Antonio Galloni, Vinous

This one-time-only bottling of 100% Colson Canyon Syrah aged 27 months in 100% new French oak was inspired by a trip Joey and our assistant winemaker, Zac Wasserman, made to France. While there they met some French winemakers who were experimenting with new techniques to keep wines clean, fresh and free of volatile acidity as they aged for an extended period of time. These barrels were tipped at a 45 degree angle and not opened at all for six months. When barrels are tilted, the rubber bung that closes the top of the barrel is submerged, sealing out any oxygen at all and eliminating the need to top off the barrel on a regular basis. This wine is rich and deeply layered. It brims with notes of plums and dark cherries as well as toasty coffee and vanilla. This wine is approachable now but will age well over the next 15 years.

tensley2010 Détente

Détente is a unique, Rhône-style blend that brings France and California together in one elegant, fruit-driven and very balanced wine. 50% of this blend comes from the 80-year-old Grenache vines of Domaine de Montvac, located in the town of Vacqueyras in the Southern Rhône region of France. There winemaker and owner Cécile Dusserre harvests and vinifies the Grenache before shipping us the finished wine. The Grenache is then blended with 50% Tensley Colson Canyon Syrah to create the Détente. 2010 was a cool harvest for us and for Cécile which meant the grapes spent a longer time on the vine, increasing each berry’s complexity and lending them a fresh acidity. In this wine, the bright berry notes, minerality and earthiness of Cecile’s Grenache marry beautifully with the dark plum, blackberry, pepper and chocoate notes of the Colson. This wine shows depth and focus. The finish is long and lingering with well-integrated, fine tanins. The 2010 Détente has had some time to age in the bottle and is drinking beautifully now but will also continue to evolve over the next 7 or 8 years.
